CATECHESIS FOR LEARNERS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

“I praise you because I am wonderfully made; awesome are your works, as I know very well.” Psalm 139:14

The Church has always taught that each human person is created as a unique gift, made in the image and likeness of God. However, it is sometimes difficult to reconcile this with the fact that there are so many children and adults with special needs who struggle to fit into the world.

In the time of Jesus, people believed that such conditions were a result of sin; this belief is sometimes still prevalent today. However, when healing the man born blind, Jesus said, “He was born blind so that God’s power might be shown in him” (John 9:3). In this way, we learn that the conditions we see as disabilities may not be disabilities, but a special part of God’s plan for the good of all people.

The modern concept of neurodiversity confirms this notion that the conditions we think of as ‘special needs’ may actually be an expression of the natural diversity in human beings. Neurodiversity refers to how each brain, though they are similar, are completely unique in the way they function. This uniqueness was and still is instrumental in the development of human evolution and civilization. That is why we’d like to promote not just the acceptance of children with special educational needs, but the celebration of their existence and diversity.
